Pioneer for Industry 4.0
Device Insight is a partner of DIN SPEC 92222 “Reference Model for Industrial Cloud Federation”, a new standard for communication between machines, more specifically Edge components and cloud systems, thereby creating a standardized framework for innovation and data-driven business models in Industry 4.0. DIN SPEC operations will be demonstrated at the 2019 Hannover Messe from April 1–5, 2019.
Industry 4.0 is growing in importance and is becoming more and more complex with an ever-increasing number of stakeholders including plant engineers, component manufacturers, mechanical engineers and cloud service providers. In the Industry 4.0 environment, machine or plant operators have to provide data from their devices to a variety of external companies, e.g. in order to precisely predict maintenance times or allow billing for new pay-per-use models. IoT applications not only require this data, but also need access to selected software functionalities of a machine or its components via remote services. At the same time, operators want complete ownership of their data, deciding precisely which information is shared or not.
Standardization is therefore one of the most important tasks in this environment. Around 31 project partners, including Device Insight and other industry leaders such as Fujitsu, General Electric, Microsoft, KUKA and the VDMA (Verband deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagebau – a German engineering association) as well as Fraunhofer Institute have developed a new standard for Industry 4.0 – DIN SPEC 92222, under the patronage of the DIN Institute, over recent months.
Independent Data Flow Security
DIN SPEC 92222 considers communication between machines, more specifically so-called Edge components in a production company’s cloud as well as company-wide to other cloud systems. Based on actual applications, DIN SPEC 92222 determines transport protocol interoperability criteria and requirements as well as necessary basic services to be called upon by Industry 4.0 stakeholders. The new standard therefore contributes to manufacturer-independent data flow security and offers innovation and data-driven Industry 4.0 business models a standardized framework.
This results in numerous advantages: thanks to clear rules of conformity, plant operators are able to retain control of their data and infrastructure. At the same time, uniform application and transport protocols considerably reduce the maintenance effort of an application. Above all, uniform standards mean that operators are not dependent on a particular platform, and other cloud solutions can be integrated more easily.
Presentation at Hannover Messe
DIN SPEC 92222 will be first presented on a larger scale at Hannover Messe (April 1–5, 2019) at the DIN stand in Hall 8, Stand E30. The new reference model will also be presented at project partner stands.
